Sylvan Glade

Cantifix project Sylvan Glade, the first contemporary villa in Keston Park; and the first building of any kind in the UK to use Heat Mirror Film extensively; was featured on the new series of Channel 4 show, Grand Designs!

The show was aired on 21st September 2011, and gave a fascinating insight into the demolition of Paul and Penny Denby’s 1950’s home; where they had lived for 19 years; through the complications of planning, right up to the completion of this stunning, serene family villa.

The Denbys took responsibility for the selection of all materials and suppliers, and were delighted to be the first to use innovative product, Heat Mirror Film within their glazing. This new technology allows users to experience all the health and wellbeing benefits of natural light, whilst minimising heat loss through the glass. The transparent film also prevents the house from overheating in the summer months.

Built in conjunction with Spaced Out Architecture Studio and Modillion Homes, Sylvan Glade is inspired by the transcendental feeling created by the light and space of a woodland clearing. The fluid plan curves link open and cellular spaces, and the glazed facades emphasize the dynamic relationship with the landscape. The glazed structure is constructed innovatively and economically, using curtain walling sections.

Unusually for a new building that takes risks, throughout construction the whole project team worked harmoniously to allow the design to realise its full potential - and to deliver to the fixed budget without compromise on the specification of efficient technology.
