Supported Glass Roofs

Product Details

Glass is both strong and weak depending on the application. If the glass panels in the roof are supported on all 4 sides then there are very few limitations to the size of the panel. There are some standard parameters that can keep the costs down, but outside of these, restrictions would only be applied by the largest size of a sheet of glass (6 metres x 3.6 metres).
If there is a join in the roof glazing, then the maximum unsupported span for that glass is about 1.9 metres. Beyond this dimension the glass will have to be supported and this can be done in a variety of materials.
The choice of the supporting material may be dictated by engineering specifications or cost. The most usual are; glass beams; steel; curtain walling sections; or timber.
In all cases the outside of the roof would still be sealed with silicone and the glass would be structurally bonded to the supporting frame.
