Project Details
This design of a contemporary single storey extension is becoming iconic and a reflection of Homeowner’s desires and life styles. The construction is relatively simple and modern materials have meant the age old problem with flat roofs has almost been eliminated. The choice of large expanses of glass, some of which slide open, and a flush threshold between the interior and exterior space, is obvious when examining how people use their homes these days. Anthropologists claim that this is a return to the communal living of the cave, with its central fire and open plan frontage.
However simplicity of design requires precision at the building stage and Contractors need to appreciate that details have to be followed completely and exactly. Having a flush threshold demands careful consideration of the water proofing, but having considered it, the detail must be implemented. Cantifix have been installing similar designs for over 20 years and we recognise that the Contractor has less experience in this area, but the frustration is their inability to play their part in ensuring the project works on its most basic level. The preparation of the site for the installation of any specialist work is a key to the success of the project, and this is the responsibility of the Contractor.
The final result is exactly as the design had been envisaged, but, in this instance, the installation was long and tiring when it should have been short and relaxing for all parties. It is lucky that when the destination is spectacular, the journey is largely forgotten. Photos by John Wright.
