Spring at Somerset House.

Somerset House is a major arts and cultural centre in the heart of London, with a Grade I listing. The incorporation of a fine dining restaurant within the historic building created many challenges, which were sensitively dealt with. The 30m2 structurally glazed roof spans the internal courtyard and provides a garden area for an “al fresco” dining experience all year round.

project details

  • The contemporary construction of the 6.1m x 5.3m glass roof echoes a more traditional glass atrium design, which is in keeping with the listed building.
  • The high performance double glazed panels are structurally bonded to a thin stainless steel support frame to keep the sightlines small and delicate.
  • The specification of the glass roof includes high strength laminates for safety and because it will need to support a maintenance load in the future.
  • The internal courtyard has been transformed into a unique and beautiful space, with real commercial value beyond the cost of the refurbishment.
