450 feet in the air, the Brighton i360 viewing platform offers spectacular views over Brighton and the south coast. The fare on offer at the base of the tower is rather more down to earth at the award-winning Belle Vue restaurant, with its focus on hearty ultra-locally sourced food.
Cantifix were approached by the architects, Marks Barfield, to create fully glazed draft lobbies for the restaurant. The restaurant is fitted out and decorated in a sparse, minimal way and is completely encased in glass walls, so our brief was to create something the fit into this aesthetic while protecting diners from the occasionally rather bracing south coast elements.
As the construction was to be completely frameless, we used a slightly thicker glass specification with laminated, toughened glass to give it rigidity and strength. To compensate for the thicker glass speciation, low iron glass was necessary to remove the green tinge common to thicker glass.
Further forays into the world of commercial structural glazing include the double height glass bridge at the Walkers Court redevelopment in Soho, which is currently under construction, and the recently completed glass façade of the Portsoken Pavillion in Aldgate.
