In just a week, Ben and George will embark upon their epic seven-month journey across Europe and Asia, cycling from London to Tokyo. Departing from St Martin’s Courtyard in Central London, we’ll be on hand to see them off, and if you fancy joining us to wish them well, more details can be found here. If you can’t make it, you can still follow their journey here and donate here.
As well as being an amazing experience for them both, there’s a bigger purpose to the whole venture – to raise money for The Movember and The Ian Williams Foundations.
The Movember Foundation was founded in 2003 and since then has tirelessly campaigned to raise awareness of and tackle mens’ health issues. Across the world mens’ lives are being cut short at an alarming rate and the Movember Foundation aim to tackle the causes – from prostate and testicular cancer to poor mental health and suicide. Their world-famous Movember campaign is just the tip of the iceberg and they work year-round to help fund 1,200 innovative projects in 20 countries and help thousands of men live happier, healthier and longer lives.
The Ian Williams Foundation was set up following the untimely death of Ian “BGI” Williams, a professional rugby player and dear friend of the Hairy Handlebars. At just 27, Ian collapsed at training and despite the best efforts of his teammates and paramedics, passed away. The foundation aims to protect the physical and mental health of athletes, but particularly rugby players, as rugby was Ian’s raison d'être. Through increased cardiac screening, emotional support and enabling those from less fortunate backgrounds to access sport, Ian’s legacy of kindness, encouragement and caring will live on for many years.
These are truly inspiring causes and we hope everyone gets right behind Ben and George all the way to Japan.
