St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace was originally built in the 15th century and was one of the few City churches to survive both the Fire of London and the 2nd World War undamaged.

The staff at the centre wanted to build a draft lobby, which also reduced the external noise levels to maintain the peaceful and contemplative atmosphere.

The Glass

  • The box is double glazed and uses acoustic glass to insulate the interior from the busy streets outside and create an internal lobby.
  • A Pureglaze door was included in the design to minimise the impact and enhance the inter-relationship between the old and new.
  • The small frameless glass extension does not block any of the natural light coming through the existing windows and the reflections add to the sense of tranquillity.
