Magdalen Chapter Hotel.

The old Eye Hospital in Exeter has been transformed into a luxury hotel as part of a re-branding for the hotel chain, for which it won City Hotel of the Year in 2013. Large sliding glass walls, Pureglaze doors and slot windows were installed in the restaurant and Spa to create this urban sanctuary. The contemporary architecture enhances the listed Edwardian building.

project details

  • The same slate flooring runs through from outside to inside and when the large Sky-frame doors are open the spaces become one.
  • Pureglaze doors have been used throughout to maximise the daylight and minimise the interruption to the views.
  • In the gym more conventional framed bi-fold doors have been used so the space can open right up- the secluded terrace becomes part of the facility for the guests.
  • The extensive use of glass allows the new spaces to become part of the institutional storyline of the existing Grade II listed building.
